What is Bulletproof Coffee?

Bulletproof coffee was first designed by Dave Asprey and is similar to a latte, but with a distinguishing twist of butter and MCT oil. So it is still the same beverage as caffeine-rich coffee but it can actually be used as a breakfast substitute. The high-fat content makes it very filling and it will satiate those hunger cravings.

Ingredients & Variations

COFFEE: Brewing any type of coffee for this recipe will do, but of course caffeinated will give it that extra energy boost. Make the coffee any regular way—the Keurig, the coffee maker, French press, or stovetop.

MCT: This is an oil that is derived from coconut or palm kernel oil. It contains high amounts of something called medium-chain triglycerides which can help with losing weight. It also helps to increase ketone production. Luckily this oil has little to no taste, so it won’t take away from the flavor of the coffee. Buy MCT oil at any health food store. Some of the bigger chains also sell it in the coffee section. Usually, it is sold in a can. The best MCT oils have no fillers, flavorings, or additives.

BUTTER: So yes, this recipe does call for butter. Seems strange, doesn’t it? I mean butter is something to put on bread. But in this case, the purpose of the butter is to provide a steady release of energy and it helps the caffeine release more slowly, thus reducing that caffeine crash. Plus it really makes this coffee taste delish! Use grass-fed butter as it has extra anti-oxidants. Ghee or clarified butter is also a great substitute for those who are lactose intolerant.

VARIATIONS: Cold bulletproof coffee from a can may also be purchased and heated up on the stove, or make your own by chilling coffee in the refrigerator, then adding the other ingredients before whipping it. It can also be made without the butter, just use heavy whipping cream instead for a delicious twist.

Benefits of Bulletproof Coffee

There are many benefits to bulletproof coffee. For those on the ketogenic diet, it is a great way of staying in a state of ketosis, thus helping in weight loss. Ketosis is a state in which the body burns fat due to a lack of carbs. Bulletproof coffee is high in fat, so this drink also helps to satiate those hunger cravings as it releases energy slowly. It is a very healthy drink, except for those who have elevated levels of cholesterol.

Ingredients

  • 10 ounces hot black coffee
  • 2 tablespoons grass-fed butter or ghee
  • 1 tablespoon MCT oil

Instructions

  • Add all ingredients to a blender and pulse for 15 seconds until creamy and foamy on top.

  • Pour into a mug and enjoy.

Notes

A hand frother can be used but it doesn’t do as good of a job as a blender does. You need the high speed to fully incorporate the oils into the coffee, otherwise, they will just rise to the top.

Coconut oil is also sometimes used in bulletproof coffee.
